What Do You Consider for Installing a Sauna Room?

Planning to install a sauna room at home? However, a genuine Finnish sauna is a bit affordable and can fit any space perfectly. The size of sauna rooms depends on the number of people going to use simultaneously. There are a few important things you should consider for a right sauna room purchase. Here are some of the best factors discussed below:

Consider the size of the room

It’s wise to keep the room smaller as possible. You should keep the depth of every bench typically 19” each and plan on space for your heater. Include an area of 4” around the front area and both sides for fence guard.

Sauna Rooms

A smaller heater is perfect for a smaller room. A smaller circuit breaker is required in the panel ensuring more efficient heating. Virtually, saunas can be of any shape and size. If you like to lie down in your sauna, please keep 6’ in at least one direction.

Consider the size of the bench.

The top bench should be at least 20” wide and 36” from the floor. Generally, benches need to be placed on legs and wall supports. It’s recommended to keep 2” x 4” cedar with ½” space between the boards. You should focus on the cubic footage of the sauna room to determine the capacity of the heating unit.

Consider the ventilation.

Ventilation plays a significant role in sauna room installation. It helps you get ultimate level of satisfaction and pleasure. In addition, ventilation units improve the speed of reheating a sauna room. If there’s shortage of fresh air inside the sauna room, you should check whether there’s insufficient ventilation or pool management of ventilation giving you uncomfortable like feeling. As a result, you’ll feel difficulty in breathing or burning the skin.

However, the sauna room contains expanded hot air that include proportionately less oxygen than the denser outside atmosphere. Sometimes sauna bathers faint unless the air is changed regularly. Only the fresh air enters when the door opens, which is insufficient.

Hence, two ventilators should be built into the walls. The inlet of the unit should be present below the heating unit whereas the outlet is present on the opposite side, ceiling or below the ceiling.

Consider the door location and swing direction.

A sauna door should swing out of the room rather than into the room. If you want a better layout of nenches, keep your door and heater on the long wall next to each other, if possible.

Consider the heater location.

You should locate the heater near the door wall. Keep in mind that the cold air naturally drawn from the door along the floor to heater. Right there, it’ll be heated and naturally go up to the ceiling.

Consider the layout of the bench.

Generally, the bunch depth used is 20”, height is 36” for upper bench or 19” for lower bench. You can go for custom sizes for your convenience.

Please remember that you can either sit or lie down in your sauna. It’s recommended to add maximum space for benches if the space permits and the upper bench will be warmer.

Why Do You Use Outdoor Barrel Sauna at Home?

When it comes to sauna rooms, outdoor barrel sauna is a new design you should consider. The barrel sauna was originated in the early 1970 and the wooden cedar barrel hot tubs became the popular additions to every home.

These saunas had cooperage design originated from wine and whiskey barrel construction, making it a perfect manufacturing technique. They can be used in an outdoor sauna room that helps you minimize the overall costs. Take a look at this post and know what makes an outdoor barrel sauna an ideal choice.

Outdoor Barrel Sauna

Generally, barrel saunas have enormous number of benefits in terms of design and architectural uniqueness. The construction of sauna forms the framing of the building, the interior and exterior lining. However, a traditional sauna room requires a frame, insulation, interior lining etc. But an outdoor barrel sauna room provides cedar wood made interior lining, exterior lining, and finishing, minimizing the overall construction costs.

Another reason behind investing in a barrel sauna is the time frame for the construction process. A DIY barrel sauna kit can be assembled easily; even if you’ve minimal carpentry skills. The barrel straps bring the walls or known as staves forming a sauna room watertight.

The end walls of the sauna room forming the door and opposite wall are constructed beforehand so that you can place the staves around the vertical end pieces. An outdoor sauna needs your proper experience on framing, roofing, and shingle, strapping and siding to line the interior walls and finish the exterior walls.

outdoor sauna

The overall sauna design protects the sauna ensuring leak-free when it’s raining. It’s due to the fact that the round top part of the roof is made using a ball and socket design overlapping each other on both sides. It results in a natural shingle effect allowing water to drain off to the next stave easily. Usually, cedar is used in designing a barrel sauna as it will expand when gets wet forming a water tight seal. Barrels are used like water tight vestibules.

Northern Lights saunas are manufactured from 1 ½” thick clear Western Red Cedar providing natural insulation benefits. Cedar construction comes with lots of air pockets in its cellulose construction that offers a natural insulation barrier. This means, you won’t need insulation that can become infested or moldy. The barrel sauna will store heat perfectly even in minus 30 degrees that will heat up and maintain the heat quickly for hours. That’s the reason why cedar is considered as the right wood for outdoor saunas.

In a barrel sauna, the air flow circulates naturally through the sauna room. It comes with rounded corners that provide a vortex which stops the air flow to flow naturally through the sauna room. The hot air rises in the sauna room and curls down every side of the sauna gently by providing a natural convection and even heat distribution.

A barrel sauna has less cost of operation. This outdoor barrel sauna design comes with standard 7’ height. Because of the round design, the sauna takes around 24% less air space for heating. This means, a sauna room heats up 24% faster and 24% less energy, making the ownership cost less than any other
